Maria Livings - One half of the design duo that make up Lush designs. Together with Marie Rodgers she has been part of the South East London art scene for a number of years. Their background in creating extraordinary three dimensional textile pieces for collaborative dance performances steered them in many directions, including their early work with Vic Reeves in the creative spawning grounds of Deptford.

Maria Livings’ late father, playwright Henry Livings was a great influence on her and she has inherited his love of unexpected narrative ideas and gentle yet absurd humour. She was brought up in a Pennine village and will always have one foot in the hills and another in the gritty metropolis. Her quirky illustrations are featured on a range of products, chiefly lampshades and home textiles, which they produce from their studio at Cockpit Arts in Deptford.

Maria’s work could be described as being in an English tradition of drawing influenced by folk art with an intellectual undercurrent. Maria Livings and Marie Rodgers both studied Fine Art, painting and printmaking at Maidstone College of Art and credit the freedom of the non-applied discipline of Fine Art with stimulating the freedom of thought that underlies their ideas.

Maria enjoys collaborative projects and has recently designed a range of greetings cards for Umpen Editions entitled “Beast Wishes”.
